ALOR SETAR, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- The Kedah government has been urged to take immediate and decisive action to address the ongoing delays at the Bukit Selambau Water Treatment Plant (LRA) construction site, near Sungai Petani, to ensure the timely completion of this critical infrastructure project.
Bau Wong Bau Ek (PH-Sidam) said that the state government must ensure the appointed contractor fulfils their obligations and completes the Bukit Selambau LRA project within the stipulated timeframe.
He noted that the contractor has been granted a third extension of time (EOT), which is set to expire on Nov 16, 2025.
“For the record, I had the privilege of accompanying Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, on a visit to the Bukit Selambau LRA construction site last week.
“While I do not wish to place blame on any party, I believe it’s important that we work together to resolve this issue.
“My suggestion is that the government provide advisory services and regularly monitor the contractor’s progress, enabling them to address any weaknesses at the site,” he said when debating the motion of thanks for the royal address at the Kedah State Legislative Assembly sitting today.
Bau Wong, the state opposition leader, expressed concern over the timely completion of the Bukit Selambau LRA project, given that a critical component - the pump - has yet to be purchased.
He added that the procurement process for the pump could take up to six months, casting doubt on whether the project will meet its current deadline.
“In light of this, I urge the state government to prepare an alternative plan to ensure the project's completion, as it is crucial for the people of Kedah.
He also called on the state government to introduce financial education campaigns to raise awareness among the public about the risks of the Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) system. He stressed that BNPL could trap consumers in financial hardship, posing risks not only to individual finances but also to broader economic stability.
“It is our collective responsibility to address this issue and prevent the community from falling into this financial trap," he added.
