KUCHING, May 1 (Bernama) -- The newly amended Labour Ordinance of Sarawak, which takes effect today, is the best gift for workers in the state in conjunction with Labour Day celebrations.
Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak chapter chairman Zaidi Nasar said the enforcement of these amendments also marks a significant achievement after a 20-year wait.
“This success proves the joint efforts of leadership and trade unions in fighting for Sarawak workers' rights.
“With these amendments, Sarawak's workforce can now enjoy benefits on par with their counterparts in Peninsular Malaysia,” he said in a statement here today.
On Dec 12 last year, the Labour Ordinance of Sarawak (Amendment) Bill 2024 was passed in the Dewan Rakyat.
Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong was reported as saying the implemented amendments would ensure the rights of 1.46 million workers in Sarawak are protected.
The amendments are considered historic as it has remained unchanged for nearly 20 years since its last amendment in 2005.
Among the major amendments introduced are increased maternity leave from 60 to 98 days, provisions for overtime payments, seven days of paternity leave, better protection for contract workers and improved health and safety rights for workers.
