MAKKAH, May 9 (Bernama) -- As thousands of Malaysian pilgrims journey between the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, a team of unsung heroes watches over them from behind the scenes - ready to act the moment something goes wrong.
Known as the Tabung Haji (TH) Highway Emergency Patrol and Call Centre, or PPKL, this team ensures the 400-kilometre journey remains smooth, safe and worry-free. Whether it’s a flat tyre, a broken-down bus, or a sudden emergency, help is never far away.
“Our real-time monitoring system allows us to track every bus and act immediately if there's an accident or technical issue,” said Malaysian Haj Delegation head Mohd Hisham Harun during a media visit to the As Sahel rest stop in Wadi Starah.
Located strategically along the main highway route, the Wadi Starah post is manned by two welfare officers and three assistants, all on standby to respond swiftly to any incident and to provide reassurance to weary travellers.
“This stop is vital for pilgrims, especially after they’ve performed their ihram rituals at Bir Ali,” Mohd Hisham added. But beyond the logistics and systems lies a deeper sense of duty.
For PPKL manager Mohd Azir Shahril Ahmad, the role is not just about responding to problems - it's about caring for people.
“I see every pilgrim as if they were my own family. The way I look after them is how I would care for my parents. They’re the Guests of Allah (Duyufurrahman), and we carry that responsibility with honour,” he said.
That care does not go unnoticed.
Siti Norazila Kamarudin, a school staff member from Kedah, was among those who felt the impact of the team’s dedication.
“Alhamdulillah, the staff are incredibly helpful. Wherever we stop, they’re there with clear instructions and support. It makes the whole journey feel safe and comforting,” she said.
