KUALA KRAI, May 12 (Bernama) -- Which mother’s heart would not break when two people dearest to her, who have stood by her through every hardship, are now battling serious illnesses of their own?
This is the heartbreaking reality faced by Rahayu Daud, 51, who has been battling chronic kidney disease for nearly four years.
During her regular dialysis sessions at Sultan Ismail Petra Hospital (HSIP) here, she was always accompanied by her husband, Mazlan Latif, 61, and their only child, Muhamad Adam Aizad Mazlan, 16.
However, tragedy struck in August 2022, when Mazlan collapsed after suffering a stroke while settling her dialysis bill. He has been bedridden ever since and now depends entirely on full-time care at home.
“When my husband became ill, our son took over the responsibility of looking after us and managing the household.
“But in June last year, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and now requires treatment at Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital and Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kota Bharu,” she told Bernama.
Rahayu shared that her world felt like it had collapsed, as her family was hit with one trial after another. But she accepts these trials as fate and is determined to carry on.
“I won’t let my illness become an obstacle. Previously, my body would feel exhausted after going through dialysis three times a week. But now, I need to push myself harder for the sake of my family,” said Rahayu, who also suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure.
Whenever their son is hospitalised, Rahayu stays by his side while her husband is cared for by their nieces and nephews.
“This has become our daily routine. The hospital is like our second home. If it’s not me receiving treatment, it’s my son. I’m grateful for the support we’ve received from government agencies, the state and non-governmental organisations,” she said.
Meanwhile, Muhamad Adam Aizad shared that his mother’s words remain a constant source of encouragement in his battle against cancer.
“She always tells me to stay positive and to keep moving forward. She reminds me that illness should never be a barrier to success,” he said.
In conjunction with Mother’s Day, celebrated yesterday, Muhamad Adam Aizad, who has been warded at HSIP for two weeks, penned a heartfelt message for his mother:
“When I could no longer walk, you gave your strength. Even when your own body nearly gave way and life struck you with countless trials, you stood tall, brave in tears, patient in pain for me and my dad.
“No love or sacrifice can match yours, dear mother, my angel without wings.”
