KANGAR, May 20 (Bernama) -- The ‘choley’ service, a decorated three-wheeled motor vehicle operating in Kampung Warna Warni, Kuala Perlis near here, will be expanded to areas around the Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal in an effort to strengthen Perlis’ tourism identity.
State Tourism, Arts, Culture and Rural Development Committee chairman Abu Bakar Hamzah said the move was in line with the recommendation by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, to make choley a tourism trademark for the state in conjunction with Visit Perlis Year 2024-2025, which will be extended to 2026.
“If Melaka is known for its trishaws, we want to highlight choley for Perlis. We will increase the number of units from the current 30 in Kampung Warna Warni to 100 in strategic areas such as the Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal,” he told reporters after observing the initial implementation of the choley service at the terminal today.
Abu Bakar said choley has the potential to serve as a leisure mode of transport for tourists who arrive early before boarding the ferry to Langkawi, or who are waiting to return to their respective destinations.
“This service will be coordinated with the ferry and roll-on, roll-off (roro) schedules. Tourists can ride the choley to enjoy the scenery around Kuala Perlis, take photos, or try local food,” he said.
Abu Bakar said the committee would engage with relevant agencies to ensure the choley operations do not disrupt traffic flow and comply with existing regulations.
“In Kampung Warna Warni, the rate is RM35 per trip. But in the Kuala Perlis town area, it may be slightly lower as the route is shorter, around RM30. We believe choley can boost the local economy and create income opportunities for young people interested in this field,” he said.
He added that each choley unit can carry two to three adults, or two adults with two children, depending on the size of the passengers.
