IPOH, May 21 (Bernama) -- The Perak Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) has advised villagers not to let their livestock wander freely around after a tiger attack in Padang Langgar, Gerik on May 17.
Its director, Yusoff Shariff said that livestock pens should suit the livestock and be capable of reducing predator attacks.
“Villagers should keep their livestock in suitable pens. Not just something put together, they should help prevent the livestock from being prey to predators,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.
Four cows have been killed by a tiger that is believed to have come from the forest nearby the village recently, but Yusoff said that there has been no sign of the tiger returning to the village even with traps set by Perhilitan after complaints were made.
“We also use drones to look for the tiger but there has been no tracks found,” he said, adding that one of the reasons the tiger is encroaching on human settlements was the dwindling population of wild boars, the tiger’s main source of food.
He also expressed his hope that the tiger would return to its original habitat to allow villagers to return to their daily routine.
