DPM FADILLAH LAUNCHES PULAU INDAH POWER PLANT TODAY

30/09/2025 01:54 PM

PORT KLANG, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof today launched the Pulau Indah Power Plant (PIPP), a high-impact natural gas-based project in Pulau Indah here.

Owned and operated by Pulau Indah Power Plant Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between Worldwide Holdings Berhad (WHB) and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), the plant uses the GE 9HA.01 gas turbines, which are known for their high thermal efficiency and hydrogen-friendly design.

According to a press release issued by PIPP Plant, a subsidiary of WHB, the plant, which is now fully operational, supplies reliable, efficient and cleaner energy to the national grid.

The facility is one of the most modern combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants in the country.

With a capacity of 1,200 megawatts fed into the national grid, PIPP supports more than 40 per cent of electricity use in the Klang Valley, in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

Built on a 60-acre reclaimed land adjacent to the Port Klang Free Trade Zone, the plant is also supported by a new 37-kilometre 500 kV dual-circuit electricity transmission line connecting PIPP to the Olak Lempit Main Input Substation (PMU) and a 42-kilometre gas pipeline connecting the Puchong Main Gas Pipeline (PGU) to the plant.

As a modern combined cycle gas turbine-based facility, PIPP operates with an efficiency of over 60 per cent, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to older generation thermal power plants.

PIPP,  which is commercially operational on March 1, 2025, under a 21-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), will generate more than 2,500 jobs during its development period.

“The project is also officially listed under the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) (2021–2025), which is the first structured development plan for Selangor that focuses on sustainable growth, infrastructure resilience and inclusive socio-economic progress.

“Recognised as one of 13 active high-impact projects under RS-1, PIPP is classified as a High Impact Project, thus emphasising its strategic importance in strengthening Selangor’s energy security and supporting the state’s long-term development goals,” read the statement.

Meanwhile, Fadhillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, in a statement, said that the project marked a significant achievement in the country's energy infrastructure, economic resilience and close cooperation between the state and federal governments.

"Energy security is the foundation of Malaysia's growth. What we witnessed today at Pulau Indah is not only a national energy landmark, but also evidence of how a state like Selangor is driving progress that supports job opportunities, investment confidence and economic growth," he said.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, in the same statement, said the power plant reflected Selangor's commitment to strengthening the state's economy through investment in reliable energy infrastructure.

"It is also to empower reputable companies like WHB, as well as support a clear vision towards a low-carbon future. Through projects like PIPP, Selangor is not only supporting national goals, but also helping to shape them," he said.
