ALOR SETAR, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- The Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) hopes the government will approve nearly RM48 million under Budget 2026, expected to be tabled next month, for the maintenance of irrigation systems and padi infrastructure.
Its chairman, Datuk Dr Ismail Salleh also urged the government to reinstate the RM600 cash incentive for padi farmers to help ease their burden.
He said maintenance of canals and irrigation systems must be carried out at least four times a year involving 44 old blocks, not only during the rainy season but also to ensure water supply during regular padi planting cycles.
“The allocation will also support other planned initiatives, including additional machinery and encouraging youth participation, which is vital to boosting national rice yields,” he told reporters at the MADA Training Complex in Alor Serdang today.
On preparations for the second planting season of 2025, Ismail said MADA has taken comprehensive measures during the monsoon transition, following the expected onset of the La Nina phenomenon from today until November.
He said all key infrastructure, including control structures and main drainage channels, has been fully maintained to keep irrigation systems in optimal condition and protect farmers’ crops.
“We are in full preparedness mode with a systematic disaster management plan in place. Logistical support has also been strengthened with assets such as mobile pumps, boats, lorries and excavators ready to be deployed if needed,” he said.
He added that as of Sept 24, harvesting activities in the Muda area had reached 50 per cent completion.
