KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- The government is taking several measures via diplomatic channels to ensure the safe release of Malaysians on board the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) who were detained by Israel earlier today.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said both the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and Wisma Putra are coordinating efforts to secure the release of the volunteers and activists detained while on a mission to deliver humanity aid for Gazans.
“In the next few hours, there will be an announcement on the arrangements that will be taken by the government. We totally reject and condemn this illegal action by the Zionist regime in intercepting and detaining the participants of the GSF in international waters.
“This wanton defiance of international laws is completely unacceptable and we will make known our protest soon once several things are coordinated between several ministries,” he said after officiating the ‘Seminar on Developing Training Module for Combating Fake News in ASEAN’ here, today.
Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and acting deputy editor-in-chief of News Services Mohd Shukri Ishak.
As of 7.50 am today (Malaysian time), 17 Malaysians were reported to have lost contact with the Sumud Nusantara Control Centre after their vessels were intercepted.
Among those on board were singer Heliza Helmi and her sister, Nur Hazwani Afiqa, who were on the Hio vessel; singer Zizi Kirana (Huga); Nurfarahin Romli and Danish Nazran Murad (Grande Blu); Musa Nuwayri, Iylia Balqis and Sul Aidil (Alma); as well as Haikal Abdullah, Muaz Zainal, Zulfadhli Khiduddin and Rusydi Ramli (Sirius).
Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has condemned in the strongest terms Israel’s interception of the GSF, saying the act targeted unarmed civilians and vessels carrying humanitarian aid to Palestine.
