KESUMA TO LAUNCH NATIONWIDE TOUR TO EXPLAIN GIG WORKERS BILL 2025

12/10/2025 11:37 AM

KANGAR, Oct 12 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) will embark on a nationwide tour to provide information on the Gig Workers Bill 2025, aimed at educating gig workers about the protections and rights it guarantees.

Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong said so far, in addition to meeting gig workers in Penang and Perlis, he has also engaged with musicians, filmmakers, and e-hailing drivers in Kuala Lumpur to explain the benefits of the bill in detail, once enacted.

"This initiative will not be confined to specific states, we will consider the most suitable locations and target groups. If possible, I aim to take this tour across the entire country and ensure we reach every part of Malaysia," he told reporters after the "Jalan Teruihhh Lindung Kendiri X Santai Anak Utara" Meet & Greet event at Dataran Dato’ Sheikh Ahmad here last night.

The Gig Workers Bill 2025, which has been approved by Parliament, is now awaiting royal assent from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim before it is gazetted and becomes law. The bill aims to safeguard and enhance the welfare of gig workers nationwide.

Sim added that last night's event was part of the tour, where numerous gig workers raised questions about their rights and benefits under the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) during the Q&A session, in addition to receiving clarification about the bill.

“We also want to gather their feedback on the bill. This is the first such law, and if there are areas that need improvement in the future, we want to be prepared,” he said.

Meanwhile, several gig workers, particularly food delivery riders, who spoke to Bernama, commended the government's efforts through KESUMA in organising such programmes.

They expressed satisfaction with the detailed explanation provided by the minister regarding social security protection for gig workers.

Food delivery rider Hasina Abdul Hamid, 51, from Beseri near Padang Besar, found the information on the bill and the benefits provided by Perkeso to safeguard gig workers' welfare clear and helpful in understanding her rights.

“Such programmes should be held more frequently. The minister was calm and thorough in addressing questions, and I appreciated the detailed information shared,” she said.

Similarly, another food delivery rider, Suhaimi Harun, 58, from Padang Besar, praised Sim for his clear explanation of Perkeso benefits for gig workers and the anticipated advantages of the bill once implemented.

“I hope these programmes continue, with the involvement of other relevant agencies and I am confident that the the bill will empower and recognise the important contributions of gig workers to the nation,” he said.
