KOGOPON II PLANT ON TRACK TO RESOLVE SABAH'S WATER WOES - ARMIZAN

12/10/2025 06:19 PM

PAPAR, Oct 12 (Bernama) -- The Kogopon II Water Treatment Plant (LRA), which is now 52 percent complete and on schedule for next year, is expected to resolve Sabah's water supply issues, said Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.

The Papar member of parliament acknowledged that the construction has faced some challenges, such as heavy rain and soil instability, but confirmed that work remains on track.

"Continuous monitoring will be carried out to ensure the project is completed next year, as scheduled," he told reporters after launching the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) machinery for the Limbahau state constituency at Dewan Kampung Ulu Sapat today.

Armizan, who is also PGRS deputy secretary-general, said the Kogopon II project demonstrates the state government's commitment to resolving Sabah's long-standing water supply problems, with the support of federal funding.

He also dismissed recent claims that the water issues could be fixed within a year as impossible, saying it is a long-standing legacy problem.

He said that construction on the Kogopon II LRA began in August 2023. The RM365 million project, scheduled for completion over three years, will double the plant's capacity from 40 to 80 million litres per year.

"We worked together to secure the funding for this project through a loan from the Federal Government, which was approved by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim," he said.

He added that the Sabah government is also constructing a second water intake for the Limbahau Emergency Water Supply Scheme in Kampung Kabang, as a key measure to reduce water supply disruptions in the district.
