PUTRAJAYA, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- The 2025 National Statistics Day (HSN) celebration is set to take place in Sungai Koyan, Kuala Lipis, Pahang, from Oct 17 to 19.
With more than 5,000 participants expected, the event aims to promote statistical literacy and bring data closer to the daily lives of Malaysians.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said this year’s HSN celebration carries the theme “Statistics: The Pulse of Life” and will be officiated by Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and will feature a range of high-impact activities.
Among the highlights are a Community Statistical Literacy Session, Career Carnival, University Debate on Statistics, traditional games, health screenings, and a Forum Perdana Ehwal Islam.
“It is our hope that public awareness of the importance of statistics in everyday life continues to grow.
“At the same time, we hope to foster a sense of shared responsibility in supporting the Department of Statistics Malaysia’s (DOSM) various statistical research efforts,” said Mohd Uzir in a recent interview ahead of the event.
According to Mohd Uzir, HSN 2025 also plays a role in strengthening the National Statistical System, which DOSM is currently implementing, helping to modernise national statistical services and enhance institutional capacity.
“Public participation in our surveys and growing use of DOSM’s data over time is very encouraging, both in terms of acceptance and practical application,” said Mohd Uzir.
He noted that the event will inadvertently increase understanding of how statistical data is crucial across multiple sectors, including education, trade, business, industry, and agriculture.
“Through this initiative, the public will better appreciate how statistics serve as a foundation for informed decision-making, policy planning, and national development assessment.
“Ultimately, HSN 2025 helps nurture a culture of statistics that supports national development and shared prosperity, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI,” he said.
Mohd Uzir said that the HSN not only highlights the role of statistics in enhancing societal well-being, but also strengthens community bonds and reaffirms DOSM’s commitment to making statistics central to the Malaysian way of life.
“We want our national statistical system to progress in tandem with the country’s development. As the saying goes, a strong country requires a strong statistical system.
“This mission cannot succeed in isolation. It requires the participation of all segments of society,” he stressed.
He said this year’s HSN is particularly special as it coincides with World Statistics Day on Oct 20, which is celebrated internationally every five years.
“What makes this year’s celebration even more remarkable is Malaysia’s achievement in being ranked first out of 197 countries in the Open Data Inventory (ODIN) for data readiness and accessibility.
“This is an extraordinary milestone that the nation can be proud of,” he added.
