25/10/2025 09:35 PM

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has expressed its desire to expand market access for local products to Brazil, including poultry and value-added meat products, liquid eggs, pet food and animal vaccines.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) in a statement today said Malaysia hopes Brazil can give positive consideration to the application to strengthen bilateral trade relations in the agricultural sector.

"In addition, Malaysia has also expressed interest in strengthening cooperation in the development of new crop varieties such as grain corn and coconuts to increase local production yields and efficiency," according to KPKM.

According to the statement, the matter was touched upon during a meeting yesterday between Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Brazilian Agriculture and Livestock Minister Carlos Fávaro.

The courtesy visit was part of Fávaro's visit to Malaysia in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit.

This visit is believed to open a new chapter in strengthening bilateral relations between Malaysia and Brazil, in addition to increasing trade, investment, and the exchange of expertise in the agricultural and food security sectors.

"The meeting opened up space for both sides to discuss potential cooperation in the agrifood sector and expand collaboration in agricultural technology, including joint research and development opportunities between the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa)," according to the statement.

Last year, the value of bilateral trade in the agricultural sector between Malaysia and Brazil reached RM8.36 billion.

Of that amount, Malaysia's exports were recorded at RM880 million, which included various food products and agricultural-based materials.

Malaysia's main imports from Brazil comprise sugar, sugar-based and honey products, food products, and agricultural-based materials including meat products, making Brazil one of Malaysia's important trading partners in the agricultural commodities sector.
