MALAYSIA, SOUTH KOREA REAFFIRM COMMITMENT TO STRENGTHEN TIES ON 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and South Korea have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen bilateral relations in conjunction with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties this year, building on the strategic partnership formalised in 2024.

The commitment was among the key outcomes of a 15-minute bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits here today.

Both leaders discussed various initiatives to deepen and expand cooperation in trade, investment, defence, infrastructure and smart city development, while also exploring opportunities in emerging sectors such as green technology, artificial intelligence and the digital economy.

Anwar also extended his best wishes to Lee on South Korea’s hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2025 Summit, which begins on Oct 31, and expressed appreciation for South Korea’s continued support in driving sustainable growth for the mutual benefit of both nations.

Earlier, Anwar and Lee co-chaired the 26th ASEAN-South Korea Summit, which was attended by other leaders of ASEAN member states, before Lee participated in the 28th ASEAN Plus Three Summit with Japan and China to further strengthen comprehensive regional cooperation.

The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, held over three days at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” brought together more than 3,000 delegates and leaders from over 30 countries and international organisations to enhance regional engagement and cooperation.
