MALAYSIA-TIMOR-LESTE NEWS AGENCY COOPERATION A KEY BRIDGE TO STRONGER DIPLOMATIC TIES - FAHMI

27/10/2025 04:05 PM

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- Collaboration between Malaysia’s and Timor-Leste’s news agencies is set to serve as an important bridge in strengthening diplomatic relations between the two countries, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

He said the collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last Saturday, would enable the people of both Malaysia and Timor-Leste to better understand each other and stay informed about current developments in both nations.

“We also see that the cooperation between the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) and Timor-Leste’s news agencies such as Radio-Televisão Timor Leste (RTTL) and TATOLI Agência Noticiosa de Timor-Leste will serve as a bridge for us to hear the stories of the people in Timor-Leste, while those in Timor-Leste can learn about what is happening in Malaysia.

“So we believe this will mark the beginning of stronger diplomatic relations between the two countries,” he told Bernama and RTM after the Communications Ministry’s monthly assembly here today.

Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Information Department director-general Julina Johan and Department of Broadcasting director-general Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman.

Last Saturday, Malaysia and Timor-Leste signed two MoUs to enhance cooperation in the fields of telecommunications and media.

The first MoU was signed between Fahmi and Timor-Leste’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Miguel Marques Gonçalves Manetelu, covering cooperation in telecommunications.

The second MoU, on information and media development, was signed between Fahmi and Timor-Leste’s State Secretary for Social Communication, Expedito Loro Dias Ximenes.

Timor-Leste was yesterday officially admitted as ASEAN’s 11th member state at the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur.
