KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara (THKD) is urging men to take a more proactive and holistic approach to their health by addressing key issues such as heart disease, cancer, obesity and infertility before symptoms become serious.
The hospital’s specialists said men often neglect preventive care, opting to seek medical help only when complications arise - a trend that can have serious consequences.
Consultant Cardiologist and Physician Dr Haizal Haron Kamar said heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death among Malaysian men, with poor sleep often compounding the risk.
“Sleep apnoea doesn’t just affect your rest, it affects your heart. Repeated drops in oxygen levels can trigger arrhythmias, raise blood pressure and increase the risk of heart attacks.
“If you’re snoring loudly or waking up unrefreshed, don’t ignore the signs, get your heart and sleep assessed early,” he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Physician Dr Rajesh Kumar Paramasivam raised colorectal cancer as another major concern, saying the disease often develops silently, which is why early screening through colonoscopy is vital.
“Many men skip colon screening because they feel fine. But colon cancer often develops silently. Detecting it early, before symptoms appear, can make all the difference in treatment success and survival,” he said.
Obesity, which increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease and infertility, also requires serious attention, said Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon Dr Reynu Rajan. She emphasised that while lifestyle changes are important, some patients may need surgical intervention.
“Bariatric surgery goes beyond losing weight — it helps reverse serious conditions linked to obesity, such as diabetes and heart disease. For the right patient, it’s a life-changing procedure that restores health and extends lifespan,” she said.
According to Consultant Respiratory Physician Dr Mohammed Fauzi Abdul Rani, smoking remains a key factor contributing to lung cancer among men, with many only discovering the disease at an advanced stage.
“Many men only discover lung cancer at an advanced stage, when it’s harder to treat. The best protection is to quit smoking and get screened early, it can save your life,” he said.
Fatty liver, often caused by obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle, is also becoming increasingly common, said Consultant Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist and Physician Dr Ruveena Bhavani Rajaram, who warned that untreated fatty liver can lead to liver failure and cancer.
“Many men don’t realise that fatty liver can quietly damage the liver and body over time. If left unchecked, it can lead to liver failure and cancer — but with early detection and intervention, it’s completely reversible,” she said.
For older men, urological health is another concern. Consultant Urologist Dr Hemanth Kumar Ramasamy said prostate changes are a natural part of ageing, but regular check-ups are important.
“Prostate changes are a natural part of aging. The key is awareness and regular check-ups, so we can step in early and keep life running smoothly,” he said.
Consultant Urologist Dr Muhilan Parameswaran added that male infertility is more common than many realise, accounting for nearly half of all infertility cases.
“Men should not hesitate to come forward for evaluation. Many causes of male infertility are treatable with timely medical attention,” he said.
THKD said it offers comprehensive multidisciplinary care across more than 60 specialties and sub-specialties, supported by over 160 specialist consultants, to meet the diverse needs of men at every stage of life.
