JPS COMPLETES MAINTENANCE OF T'GANU HYDROLOGY STATIONS AHEAD OF MONSOON SEASON

14/11/2025 06:49 PM

KUALA TERENGGANU, Nov 14 (Bernama) -- The Terengganu Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS) has completed comprehensive maintenance work on the state’s network of hydrological telemetry stations in preparation for the Northeast Monsoon (MTL).

Its director, Osman Abdullah, said the proactive measure was aimed at ensuring all systems that monitor rainfall, river levels and flood early-warning sirens are in optimal condition and functioning properly.

He said the maintenance work involved 93 rain stations, 54 river-level stations, 10 webcam stations and flood early-warning sirens at 11 locations.

“This step is to ensure that all equipment at all stations functions well to transmit accurate and real-time data to the main control centre.

“All stations across the state have been fully serviced. This effort is crucial to ensure that the hydrological data received is always accurate, reliable and responsive to current weather changes,” he told Bernama today.

Osman said the information gathered through the system would help the National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre make forecasts and issue flood early warnings more effectively when continuous heavy rain occurs.

He added that among the key maintenance works undertaken were the inspection and maintenance of rain and water-level sensors, calibration and testing of the data transmission (telemetry) system, as well as station-area cleaning and minor infrastructure repairs.

“With strengthened technical readiness, the loss of life and property due to flooding can be prevented or minimised,” he said.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department previously announced that the MTL season was expected to begin yesterday and continue until March next year, with five to seven episodes of heavy rain forecast during the period.
