GEORGE TOWN, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- The Penang Department of Agriculture (DOA) has set up paddy demonstration plots using the rice check method in Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) to curb infestations of a fast-growing weed known as ‘keladi agas’, which have been reducing paddy yields.
Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said the demonstration plots cover four hectares and aim to reinforce precise and effective agronomic practices to reduce weed attacks.
He added that a total of 12 campaigns and briefings on weed, pest, and disease control have been conducted this year to raise farmers’ awareness of the importance of early intervention, starting from land preparation.
“The state government is always mindful of declining paddy yields and the losses faced by farmers, including some who have harvested nothing due to the infestation.
“At present, the government prioritises restoring paddy fields and improving yields through integrated control approaches, technical assistance, and the promotion of sustainable farming practices at the farmer level,” he said when replying to a question from Amir Hamzah Abdul Hashim (PN-Permatang Pasir) in the state legislative assembly today.
He noted that, in addition to the infestations, other factors contributing to lower yields include poor irrigation water quality, use of uncertified seeds, non-standard agronomic practices, and labour shortages.
Fahmi said the state government will examine the need for one-off assistance for affected farmers, taking into account the extent of damage, the impact on their income, and the state’s current financial capacity.
“The state government will also collaborate with the Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA), the Farmers Organisation Authority (LPP), and the department to provide technical support and other assistance to affected farmers,” he added.
