SARAWAK WELCOMES FEDERAL GOVT'S PLAN TO INCREASE PARLIAMENTARY SEATS

17/11/2025 04:28 PM

KUCHING, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has welcomed the Federal Government’s agreement in principle to increase the state’s parliamentary seats.

He said the proposal to expand representation, potentially up to one-third of total parliamentary seats, remains entirely under federal jurisdiction, but Sarawak is ready for further discussions.

“We thank the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, for agreeing to increase the seats. Whether it reaches one-third, we will negotiate.

“If they are ready, we’ll discuss further... If not, we wait,” he told reporters after gracing the Sarawak Development Bank’s (DBOS) Integrity Day, themed Advancing Sarawak with Integrity, and launching the DBOS Islamic Banking Window here today.

The Prime Minister previously said the government had in principle agreed to increase the number of parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak, taking into account the number of voters in the two states.

He said that so far, there is no commitment to increasing the number of parliamentary seats in Sabah and Sarawak to one-third of the total seats.

Currently, Sabah holds 25 parliamentary seats and Sarawak 31.
