MELAKA PREPARED FOR NORTHEAST MONSOON SEASON

21/11/2025 11:50 AM

MELAKA, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- The Melaka government has made comprehensive preparations for various aspects of disaster management, including the coordination of all relevant agencies and authorities to address potential floods during the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) season, which began last week.

State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), chaired by the State Secretary, has been holding regular meetings to monitor and discuss the latest developments throughout the MTL period.

“As of today, although the monsoon has begun, Melaka remains in stable condition, and no major issues or disasters have been reported. Nevertheless, we will continue to stay on full alert in all aspects.

“The JPBN has received a briefing from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) on the weather forecast, preparedness measures for the MTL, and possible scenarios. The committee meets regularly to report the latest information on monitoring efforts and the readiness of all agencies involved,” he said when met after officiating the 2025 State Cooperative Movement Appreciation Night.

The event was also attended by Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM) Chairman Lt Gen (Rtd) Datuk Ahmad Norihan.

Rais said monitoring at high-risk locations is being carried out periodically by the relevant agencies, and early warnings will be issued if any disaster risks are detected to enable residents to take necessary precautionary measures.

He added that temporary evacuation centres have also been fully prepared in all aspects, particularly in terms of welfare, to ensure the comfort and safety of affected residents.

Earlier, MetMalaysia, in a statement, announced that the 2025/2026 MTL, which began on Nov 14, is expected to continue until March next year, with between five and seven episodes of continuous heavy rainfall forecast.
