RISING WATERS FORCE MUM TO FLEE WITH BABY TO SK SERING RELIEF CENTRE

KOTA BHARU, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- With floodwaters rising rapidly at her rented house in Kampung Sadur, Wakaf Ai, a 22-year-old mother only had time to grab a bag and her three-month-old baby boy as they fled to seek shelter at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Sering temporary relief centre for the first time.

The baby boy, Muhammad Adam Rifqi Arif, was evacuated with his parents after their living room became submerged up to knee level during the flood, which hit the area for the first time.

The boy's mother, Nurul Alina Nola, said the flood was very different from previous ones, as their residential area usually only gets flooded for a short time before the water recedes - but this time it hasn't stopped raining since Friday.

"We did not have time to save any important items, like our television and several furniture sets, because the water levels rose swiftly.

"This is the first time we have evacuated to a relief centre. We have also run out of disposable diapers and baby essentials,” she told Bernama at the PPS here today.

Meanwhile, another resident, Azlinda Remli, 43, also had to move to the relief centre with her three children and two grandchildren after their house was submerged up to the knee level.

The single mother, who works at a factory in Padang Tembak, Pengkalan Chepa, said they are now sheltering under a tent specifically made to house four people at the relief centre.

She added that the residents can only hope that the rain will subside so that they can return home, plan their clean-up works and ensure the safety of their respective families.
