HAT YAI FLOODS: EVACUATION OF UUM STUDENTS, LECTURERS EXPECTED THIS MORNING

27/11/2025 09:18 AM

ALOR SETAR, Nov 27 (Bernama) -- The evacuation of 36 students and four lecturers from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) who are stranded in flood-hit Hat Yai, Thailand is expected to be carried out this morning.

In a Facebook post, UUM said the operation will be coordinated by the Consulate General of Malaysia in Songkhla with the support of non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

“Let us all pray that this effort can be carried out tomorrow (today),” the post said.

UUM also said that earlier attempts were made with the help of NGOs by deploying 12 boats to deliver food and essential supplies to the affected students and lecturers at the Wangburapa Grand Hotel.

However, the strong current forced the boats to turn back.

According to UUM, unlike other areas, the hotel where the students are staying is near a river, and the floodwaters have risen to more than one storey above ground.

It said the situation has made it impossible for any vehicle to reach the hotel.

All the affected students and lecturers are from the Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy (TISSA-UUM) and have been stranded since Nov 22 while attending the Thai-MYS Cultural Exchange Programme 2025.
