MELAKA, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- The Department of Environment (DOE) has allocated RM100,000 to implement two projects under the MADANI Adopted School (SAM) initiative at SK Kampung Tun Razak in Bukit Katil.
Its director-general, Datuk Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar, said the funds will support the Green House and Aquaponics Facility Project and the Digitalisation of the School Resource Centre Project.
“The school was selected because it is already sustainability-oriented, and we hope these programmes will further strengthen environmental stewardship among the school community,” he said after officiating the launch of SAM and the Guidelines for Implementing and Assessing Sustainable Schools – Environmental Award (SLAAS) on Thursday.
Melaka DOE director Rosli Mustafa and SK Kampung Tun Razak headmaster Norazman Hussin also attended the event.
Meanwhile, in his speech, Wan Abdul Latiff said the new SLAAS guidelines, developed jointly by DOE, the Ministry of Education (MOE) and University Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Institute for Environment and Development (Lestari), will serve as the official reference for the 2025/2026 SLAAS cycle.
He said as of Nov 25, a total of 1,598 schools have registered for SLAAS, and DOE aims for a 30 per cent participation rate from the country’s 10,220 schools.
“This effort is intended to expand school involvement in mainstreaming sustainable practices and make every school an agent of environmental change,” Wan Abdul Latif said.
In a statement, DOE noted that SAM is a Finance Ministry initiative, supported by the MOE, that provides RM100,000 to each selected school for sustainability projects in line with set guidelines.
SK Kampung Tun Razak is the 16th school in Melaka to benefit from the programme, strengthening the state’s network of sustainability-focused schools.
