FLOODS: JBPM ON FULL ALERT, THREE FORWARD BASES ACTIVATED

28/11/2025 07:07 PM

TELUK INTAN, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is on full alert, having activated three forward bases as early logistics deployment centres to face the risk of flooding which is expected to worsen following the latest weather developments.

JBPM deputy director-general (operations) Datuk Ahmad Izram Osman said the forward bases are located in Bertam, Penang for the northern zone, Subang Selangor for the central zone and Wakaf Tapai in Marang, Terengganu, for the east coast.

"Through these bases, we can quickly move assets and personnel from one state to another if the flood worsens.

"Aerial mobilisation is also being carried out as we have stationed assets at these bases to ensure flood management is at an optimum level," he said after surveying the flood situation in Teluk Intan here today.

Also present at the inspection was Perak JBPM director Datuk Sayani Saidon.

Ahmad Izram said that JBPM has planned a chain movement strategy so that each state maintains sufficient operational strength.

"We do not want assets from one state to be withdrawn too early, leaving that state short of personnel when disaster occurs in its zone.

"So, as long as there is no urgent need, we will not move these forces, meaning that each state will remain in charge of its own respective state if the situation is still under control," he said.

Commenting further, Ahmad Izram said JBPM had also mobilised heavy machinery assets and identified alternative routes that remain passable to ensure access to the forward base is not cut off.

"So far, the number of personnel in affected states is still sufficient and there is no need yet for reinforcement from outside (the state).

"Our members have not been moved out because at the moment local forces is still adequate but if it is really necessary, only then will we transfer personnel (inter-state)," he said.

He said apart from permanent personnel, JBPM is also ready to activate the volunteer fire-fighter Teams (PBS) and community firefighters if the situation warrants it.

"The situation in several states shows a serious increase based on weather monitoring and cloud movement patterns.

"So far, the situation is still under control but if it gets serious, we will freeze leave and increase shifts from 12 hours to 24 hours," he said.
