KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws upon former Chief Justice of Malaysia, Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, in recognition of her service and contributions.

A Universiti Malaya (UM) alumna, Tun Tengku Maimun, made history as the first woman appointed as Chief Justice.

Presiding as Chancellor at the university's 65th convocation ceremony, Sultan Nazrin also awarded the title of Professor Emeritus to several distinguished academics.

In the clinical and scientific fields, the honour was bestowed upon Prof Dr Khoo Ee Ming (Family Medicine), Prof Dr Phrabhakaran Nambiar (Forensic Odontology and Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology), Prof Datuk Dr Rohana Yusof (Virology), as well as Prof Datuk Dr Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud (Epidemiology and Health Informatics).

The title was also conferred upon Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Zambri Zainuddin in Astronomy and Islamic Astronomy, and Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Hidayat Buang in Contemporary Islamic Law.

Earlier, Sultan Nazrin announced the appointment of Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini as the Pro-Chancellor of the UM.

In his royal address, he advised graduates to wisely manage their success, remain humble, and uphold moral values to navigate the challenges of professional life.

His Royal Highness emphasised the critical importance of stewarding success with prudence, particularly when it is sudden.

He noted that those who adeptly leverage their achievements as a foundation for further accomplishment are truly blessed. Conversely, he declared it a profound tragedy when hard-won success is ultimately undone by an inability to manage it judiciously.

“Become individuals who are courteous and well-mannered, trustworthy, honest, sincere and act with integrity, thereby continually enhancing your own standing and the good name of your family. Steer clear of any actions that could lead to your own ruin or disgrace your relatives.

“Use knowledge as a guiding light for your life’s journey, ensuring you avoid darkness. Use your wisdom to help build a world that is more just, peaceful, prosperous and humane,” he said.

Sultan Nazrin also extended his congratulations and gratitude to the entire university community for their commitment and dedication, which have successfully placed UM at the 58th position in the QS World University Rankings.

A Nov 27 UM announcement stated that this convocation, which takes place from today to Dec 10, involves 22 sessions to celebrate a total of 11,356 graduates.

This cohort, the largest in the university's 120-year history, comprises 686 PhD graduates; 5,171 Master's and Postgraduate Education Diploma graduates; 4,127 Bachelor's degree graduates; and 1,372 Advanced Diploma, Executive Diploma, and Diploma graduates.
