KOTA BHARU, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- Concerned with the difficulty faced by residents, especially flood victims, in obtaining food supplies at reasonable prices, a breeder from Melor has come forward to sell local beef at a price of only RM20 per kilogram in Kampung Sireh today.
This initiative not only eased the burden during the monsoon season but also attracted a large crowd of residents from early morning.
The two-day sales programme by the breeder, Wan Nashrudin Wan Noh, 56, involved the slaughter of four cows, yielding an estimated 600 kilograms of meat, excluding bones, and is expected to benefit more than 500 recipients.
"This is the third year we have done this when the flood season arrives. The cattle supply was brought from Ketereh, and although there might not be much profit, we consider it part of an effort to help the public. This morning alone, the meat was sold out in less than one hour," he told Bernama today.
The programme was implemented in collaboration with Kalam Kafe, a premise operated by a group of retired former journalists who provided space and facilities for the distribution of the meat.
The owner of Kalam Kafe, Zabidi Ishar, said they also provided 10 kilograms of cooked meat, prepared as daging singgang (spiced boiled meat) and fried meat, to be given free of charge to visitors as an added value to the programme.
Kalam Kafe, which has been operating for the past year, is not only a casual meeting place for former media practitioners but also functions as a location for implementing community activities in the area.
A resident from Telipot, who only wished to be identified as Tuan Nurul, said the initiative was very helpful, especially for families affected by the flood who are still cleaning their respective homes.
"Out of the 10 kilograms of meat I bought, I used some for my family and distributed the rest to my affected neighbours. An initiative like this is very helpful because many are still in the process of recovering their homes after the flood," he said.
