SGR STRENGTHENS SARAWAK'S ENERGY TRANSITION AGENDA - JULAIHI

01/12/2025 07:56 PM

KUCHING, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- Sarawak continues to strengthen its energy transition agenda through the implementation of various strategic projects under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) to increase the use of natural gas in the state, said state Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi today.

He said that the SGR plan is being actively implemented by Petroluem Sarawak Berhad  (PETROS) through the development of gas infrastructure at four main hubs - Miri, Samalaju, Bintulu and Kuching - via several initiatives.

He added that the main project - the 500 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) plant in Miri - has achieved 30 per cent progress and is expected to be operational commercially in the fourth quarter of 2027.

"In addition, the 65-kilometre (km)-long Kidurong–Samalaju Gas Pipeline project, which supplies 300 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd), is 91 per cent completed and is expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2026,” he said when winding up the debate for his ministry at the State Legislative Assembly sitting today.

According to him, the Gas to Bintulu (GtB) pilot project has been operating since July, supplying piped natural gas to 40 low-income households in Sungai Plan as part of measures to bring local gas resources directly to the community.

"The Gas Direct to Kitchen initiative at the Taman Ceria Quadruplex in Miri is also being continued, with 589 residences connected to piped gas, while the remaining connection will be carried out in stages until the project is fully completed in the fourth quarter of 2027,” he said.

Julaihi said Sarawak is also developing the Virtual Pipeline System (VPS), which is set to supply liquified natural gas (LNG) from Bintulu to Kuching. It is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2026, expand gas access to off-grid areas and support local industries.

"As for the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub (KLCH) project, it will encompass the development of a regasification terminal, a low-carbon petrochemical park, gas infrastructure and the construction of a 5,000 MW CCGT plant in Kuching,” he added.
