REPAIR WORK ON SUBSIDENCE NEXT TO SHINEVILLE PARK TO BE CARRIED OUT IMMEDIATELY – EXCO

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 3 (Bernama) -- The Penang government has ordered immediate repair works following subsidence and the failure of a retaining structure along the maintenance route of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) at Sungai Dondang and Sungai Air Hitam, Thean Teik Highway, here.

Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) together with the state DID had issued an official directive to Jiran Bina Sdn Bhd to carry out the repairs as the route remained under the responsibility of the Shineville Park housing project developer.

He said the directive was issued after the agencies conducted a technical investigation at the site following complaints regarding the retaining structure failure on Oct 25.

“Immediate repair works include installing concrete sheet piles along a stretch of 447 metres, preparing detailed designs for long-term repair works, removing excess soil in the open area, implementing reinforcement works on the upper retaining wall and supervising and monitoring the repair works on the structure and slope on a full-time basis.

Zairil said further discussions would be held soon with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) as the land involved had been identified for the construction of a TNB Main Distribution Substation (PPU).

As a precautionary measure, he said MBPP had closed Solok Thean Teik 2 until repair works were carried out and the area was deemed safe again.
