KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) today launched the DOSM GEOHUB data portal, a strategic initiative that facilitates access to geospatial information integrated with the country's official statistics.
Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said DOSM GEOHUB was not merely a portal but a digital mapping platform that integrates statistics and geospatial data in line with the United Nations' recommendations in the Global Statistical Geospatial Framework (GSGF) to provide broader, more accurate and accessible geospatial information.
"DOSM GEOHUB offers various functions that support access, usage and understanding of national statistics based on geospatial elements.
"It also supports government agencies, researchers and policymakers for urban and regional development planning, social and economic impact assessments, targeted development interventions, as well as the coordination of aid programmes and public facilities," he said at the launch of the portal today.
The platform, developed in-house, also supports decision-making based on more granular location analysis, enabling policies to be targeted to the right locations, he added.
"DOSM GEOHUB becomes the heart of integration between statistics and geospatial data to address today's development questions, and even paves the way for a more sustainable, inclusive and evidence-based future in decision-making," Mohd Uzir said, pointing out that the portal represents the department’s commitment to empowering the public and the country through data.
As a geospatial data hub, DOSM GEOHUB brings together various types of spatial visualisations built from social, economic and environmental statistics, enabling analyses of the country's current conditions that are more comprehensive and responsive to any changes.
It allows users to explore information on population, gender, age groups, the economy, and current population projections at the national, state, and district levels in Malaysia, as well as interactive thematic maps with spatial analysis capabilities and access geospatial statistical data layers that conform to the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards.
Its Storymap function, which presents development narratives using maps, graphics and images alongside various other statistical information, makes it easier for users to understand the information presented.
