CABINET REFERS KOTA BHARU MP TO PARLIAMENT PRIVILEGES COMMITTEE

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- The Cabinet today decided that Kota Bharu MP Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan will be referred to the Committee of Privileges for further scrutiny, in line with the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that, pursuant to this decision, the motion tabled in the Dewan Rakyat will be refined to enable the matter to be formally referred to the Committee of Privileges for consideration in accordance with established procedures.

“This decision was made after taking into account the views raised during the debate and to ensure that the MP is given the opportunity to be heard by the Committee of Privileges, as well as to enable the committee to make any findings within its specific mandate under the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders.

“The MADANI government is confident that the Committee of Privileges will conduct this review with full responsibility, independence and integrity, in line with the role entrusted to it by the House,” she said in a statement.

Azalina added that the MADANI government remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of Parliament as the nation’s highest institution, while ensuring that arising matters are addressed within the framework of parliamentary democracy.

Yesterday, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul announced that the motion to suspend Takiyuddin from attending Dewan Rakyat sittings for six months has been deferred to the next meeting.

Johari announced the decision after Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah requested that the motion be postponed

When presenting the motion, Shamsul Anuar said Takiyuddin had spoken about an incident involving the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) at Masjid Rusila, Marang in Terengganu during the policy stage debate on the Supply Bill 2026 on Oct 22.

He said Takiyuddin had linked the incident to the 1985 Memali tragedy, described it as an attack on a place of worship, and portrayed it as an attempt to intimidate the public — remarks that cast a negative image on MMEA personnel and the agency as part of the public service.
