GEORGE TOWN, Dec 6 (Bernama) -- The Selangor government is confident that the target of eight million tourists in conjunction with Visit Selangor Year (VSY) 2025 can be achieved this month based on the performance from January to September which recorded 6.4 million visitor arrivals.
Selangor Local Government and Tourism Excon Datuk Ng Sue Lim said that to achieve the target, Tourism Selangor will intensify the promotion of ecotourism, cruise tourism and medical tourism products in the remaining period of less than a month before 2025 closes.
“So far (as of the third quarter) we have achieved 80 per cent (of the target of eight million) of local and international visitors recorded coming to Selangor with tourism receipts reaching RM11.4 billion.
“We are confident that we can achieve the target set, even more than that considering the number of daily tourists to Selangor is the highest based on the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) report,” he told Bernama after the Selangor Kan Ada! Cruise Trip 2025 programme, here today.
Held on the luxury cruise ship Piano Land, the programme was also attended by Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling and Hwajing Travel & Tours managing director Kenny Cheong Ken Lee.
Ng said the cruise tourism initiative launched since November is expected to be one of the main catalysts for the increase in the number of visitors to Selangor.
“So far, the response to cruise tourism has been good and is still in the phase to be strengthened. The potential of this industry is huge, involving domestic and international tourists, but it depends on the cruise line whether it is to Penang, Phuket, Hong Kong or Macau,” he said.
He said the initiative also aims to make Port Klang not only a port of call, but also a homeport, thus giving a high economic impact to the hotel, food and tourism sectors in Selangor.
In addition, Ng said that in line with Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), his party would emphasise arts and cultural tourism to attract more tourists to Selangor.
“So far, the only cultural village that exists is Mah Meri (in Pulau Indah) and that is not enough. We need to have one cultural village and show that encompasses everything.
“So, we will work with the Housing and Culture Committee chairman, Datuk Borhan Aman Shah and the Selangor Malay Custom and Heritage Corporation (PADAT) to highlight the uniqueness of Selangor culture to visitors. I am sure that it will be liked by domestic and international tourists,” he said.
