KKR APPROVES RM10.8 MLN ALLOCATION FOR SLOPE REPAIR NEAR PADANG BESAR

06/12/2025 06:39 PM

KANGAR, Dec 6 (Bernama) -- The Works Ministry (KKR) has approved an allocation of RM10.8 million on Dec 1 to carry out slope repair work at several locations along Jalan Kaki Bukit-Wang Kelian and Jalan Pagar Keselamatan Bukit Kuan Choh, near Padang Besar.

According to a statement from Istana Arau today, preliminary work is expected to begin soon, while major repair work is scheduled to start in January, with the overall repair period estimated to take between six and 12 months depending on weather conditions and the extent of the damage.

"The repair work will involve several slope engineering techniques such as 'Tie Back Wall', 'Soil Nailing', 'ECM', 'Hydromulching' and 'Rockfall Netting'. These technical approaches were chosen to ensure long-term slope stability while also improving the safety of the route for users," said the statement.

According to the statement, the information was presented by Perlis Public Works Department director Ir. Norikhwan Abu Seman when accompanying the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, during a visit to the landslide site in Wang Kelian, Kaki Bukit yesterday.

In the statement, Norikhwan said that the route on Jalan Kaki Bukit–Wang Kelian is still closed to the public, but scheduled vehicle movement was permitted for vehicles not exceeding three tonnes from 7 am to 7 pm.

“This route is open only to local residents, vehicles involved in repair work, and tourists or individuals who wish to retrieve stranded vehicles.

“Meanwhile, from 7 pm to 7 am, movement is limited to villagers, repair teams and emergency matters only," the statement added.

For the record, the slope collapsed due to continuous rain on Nov 23, causing floods in Perlis, affecting areas such as Padang Besar, Kangar and Arau. The floods fully subsided today when the last temporary relief centre (PPS) at Sekolah Kebangsaan Felcra Lubuk Sireh, Padang Besar, was officially closed at 10 am today.
