MELAKA, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- The exchange of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Melaka state government today is aimed at strengthening strategic cooperation in the implementation of the Melaka Smart City Initiative.

MCMC and the Melaka state government, in a joint statement, announced that the cooperation is in line with the implementation of the Melaka Smart Blueprint 2035 (SMB2035), which serves as the main guide for the state's digital transformation towards more sustainable, habitable, and resilient development by 2035.

The statement informed that the MoU covers cooperation in various aspects such as expanding smart connectivity infrastructure, encompassing high-speed public Wi-Fi services, future-ready optical fibre networks, and the installation of smart poles to ensure comprehensive network coverage throughout the state.

Additionally, the cooperation also includes efforts to strengthen public safety, traffic management, and smart technology-based tourism through a Network Operation and Command Centre to ensure integrated implementation.

"The implementation of this cooperation is expected to have a positive impact on the people through the expansion of access to high-speed public Wi-Fi, more efficient digital service delivery, smoother traffic management, and reduction of disaster risk," the statement said.

The MoU exchange ceremony involved MCMC Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and Melaka State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad, and was witnessed by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

According to the statement, the effort will also stimulate local digital economic development by strengthening the tourism, retail, logistics, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) sectors, thereby creating a more conducive environment for investment.

At the same time, the cooperation also provides the necessary smart city infrastructure foundation for the state's long-term digital transformation, further solidifying Melaka's position as a competitive smart state internationally.

"MCMC is committed to continuing to work closely with the Melaka state government to successfully implement the national digital agenda, ensuring smart city development that is inclusive, sustainable, and beneficial to all levels of society," the statement said.
