SELANGOR GOVT TO FACILITATE AID FOR 44 FAMILIES IN KAMPUNG INDIAN SETTLEMENT

SHAH ALAM, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- The Selangor government will facilitate assistance for 44 families in Kampung Indian Settlement, Gombak, who are required to vacate their homes to make way for more orderly development of the area.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the assistance aims to ease residents’ burden, including rental costs during the construction of roads and drainage systems, as well as the implementation of flood mitigation measures.

He said the Gombak District and Land Office (PDT) has also held discussions with Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd (SPNB) on rebuilding more comfortable homes, with costs and payment mechanisms affordable to residents.

“The process is expected to begin next month after the Thaipusam celebration, in consideration of festive preparations and to allow sufficient time for residents,” he said in a statement today.

Amirudin said PDT Gombak will coordinate the overall efforts to ensure smooth implementation, for the long-term benefit of residents and to improve infrastructure quality in Gombak.

He added that he chaired an engagement session this week with Kampung Indian Settlement residents and relevant agencies to explain the state government’s plans to develop the area in a more systematic manner and to obtain residents’ feedback before the project is implemented.

According to Amirudin, the engagement process is important to prevent misinterpretation of the initiative as racially motivated or oppressive.

“Kampung Indian Settlement needs to be developed in a more organised and structured manner as some houses were built on road reserves,” he said.

Without intervention, he said several issues could arise, including inadequate road access, complications in land ownership transfers and flood risks.

“The area lacks road buffers and basic drainage systems that are critical to preventing rainwater accumulation,” he added.
