BEIJING, Dec 28 (Bernama) -- Many drivers have long doubted whether electric vehicles (EVs) can match the thrill and handling of traditional cars and Xiaomi’s high-performance SU7 Ultra completely debunks such doubts.

On a recent test drive, the SU7 Ultra impressed with explosive acceleration, sharp handling, and smooth power flow, proving Xiaomi’s EVs can rival sports cars in both performance and precision.

SU7 Ultra is the flagship performance model of Xiaomi’s first electric vehicle lineup, the SU7 series. Developed from the SU7 prototype, it is positioned as a track-focused, high-performance electric sedan.

The car is equipped with a tri-motor all-wheel-drive system producing a maximum output of 1,548PS, paired with a lightweight carbon-fibre body, as well as a track-tuned chassis and suspension designed for high-performance driving.

According to Xiaomi, one of the SU7 Ultra’s key design objectives is to take on the world’s most demanding circuits, including Germany’s Nürburgring.

The prototype sets a new lap record for four-door cars at Nürburgring while performance figures show that the SU7 Ultra accelerates from 0–100 km/h in just 1.98 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 5.86 seconds, with a designed top speed of 350 km/h.

In early December, foreign media organisations including Bernama visited Xiaomi’s EV factory in Beijing’s Economic and Technological Development Zone (Beijing E-Town), observing a highly automated production environment where more than 700 robots work in seamless coordination

The integrated facility brings together research and development, manufacturing, testing, and delivery operations under one roof, showcasing Xiaomi’s vertically integrated approach to EV production.

Visitors gained close insight into the company’s R&D capabilities, automated production lines, and on-site test tracks, illustrating how Xiaomi sustains consistent quality while boosting efficiency and output.

Bernama observed that the technology showroom showcased Xiaomi’s development journey and strategic foray into the EV sector, featuring key vehicle components such as powertrains, chassis, and body structures.

The vehicle’s HyperOS system was also demonstrated, highlighting the company’s ‘Human × Car × Home’ smart ecosystem. It enables drivers to control smart home appliances, monitor home security cameras, and manage connected devices directly from the vehicle — a prime example of Xiaomi’s cross-platform integration capabilities.

Visitors also had a close-up look at Xiaomi’s EV lineup, including the SU7, SU7 Max, SU7 Ultra, and the newly launched YU7, before touring the assembly workshops. The demonstration of highly automated processes showcased how Xiaomi achieves large-scale vehicle production in a short period.

The visit concluded with a test ride of the SU7 Ultra on the factory track, offering first-hand experience of the vehicle’s performance, handling, and in-car systems.

By opening its EV facilities to Southeast Asian media, Xiaomi highlighted its commitment to accelerating global EV ambitions and underscored the company’s strategic expansion beyond consumer electronics.

The SU7 made its Malaysian debut in October last year with a showroom at Suria KLCC in Kuala Lumpur, attracting widespread attention from the public and technology enthusiasts.

Xiaomi’s electric vehicles are currently not sold overseas, but the company said it is preparing for overseas expansion, with plans to enter international markets in 2027, starting with Europe.

From a regional perspective, Malaysia offers unique advantages for EV development, with the 772-km North-South Expressway linking Thailand to Singapore and serving as the region’s longest toll highway.

The country’s extensive highway network puts the spotlight on EV stability, power, and smart-assist features for long-distance travel, while providing a platform to demonstrate technology and build consumer confidence in performance, safety, and reliability.

Imagine driving the SU7 Ultra along the North-South Expressway — it promises an unprecedented experience for EV owners, though motorists are reminded to adhere to traffic rules and prioritise safety.
