ALOR SETAR, Dec 28 (Bernama) -- Research and studies carried out by the Malaysian Silat Cekak Association (PSSCM) are seen as capable of helping to nurture a critically minded and morally upright society, which in turn can contribute to national development.

The Raja Muda of Kedah, Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Sultan Sallehuddin, who is also the Deputy Patron of PSSCM, said that over its 60-year history, the association has successfully produced many scholars and generated 60 academic research and study titles.

“The etiquette and customs of this silat art form serve as an indirect learning method passed down from generation to generation, and these values act as a safeguard in protecting religion, race and nation. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has also recognised silat as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

“This recognition highlights silat as a valuable source of academic research in the fields of anthropology, sociology, physical education and cultural heritage.

Such scholarly and cultural research activities also open avenues for new discoveries that enrich the nation’s body of knowledge,” Tengku Sarafudin said at the ‘Sirih Pulang Ke Gagang’ Gala Night held in conjunction with the 60th Diamond Jubilee celebration of Silat Cekak here last night.

The Raja Muda said the development of knowledge through cultural research by PSSCM should serve as an example, as it is carried out continuously at both local and international levels, contributing to the empowerment of knowledge, strengthening of national identity and recognition of cultural heritage on the global stage.

“I take pride in PSSCM for becoming a silat institution that actively promotes scholarly research and cultural studies. These efforts are for future generations, who must be guided by knowledge and culture, as they are the heirs who will contribute to the rebuilding of civilisation,” Tengku Sarafudin.

Meanwhile, PSSCM president Datuk Maideen Kadir Shah said the selection of Kedah as the venue for the programme was a tribute to the origins and heritage of silat, which began in the state before spreading nationwide.

“This state is the root and historical foundation of silat. We aim to ensure the sanctity, authenticity, and continuity of Silat Cekak, with the royal institution playing a pivotal role as a symbol of unity and protection for this martial art.

“We also want to introduce silat to the international community, as it is one of the means to foster unity and harmony. At present, silat has been successfully developed in Sydney, Australia, and we hope it can eventually be expanded to other countries as well,” he said.
