122 PROJECT EXTENSIONS PLANNED FOR PENANG 2026

31/12/2025 02:11 PM

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- A total of 122 extension projects are planned to be implemented in 2026 in Penang, covering public infrastructure, community facilities and special economic projects, which are expected to be realised smoothly.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has called on all implementing departments and agencies at the state and federal levels to be mobilised in an integrated manner with a spirit of shared responsibility to ensure that every high-impact project under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in Penang can be implemented effectively.

“As a rapidly developing state, the need for modern infrastructure and an efficient public transport system is increasingly urgent. Good mobility will not only increase the state’s productivity and competitiveness, but also contribute to a better quality of life and a more sustainable environment for future generations.

“In this regard, I look forward to the implementation of the Juru–Sungai Dua (JSD) Elevated Expressway Project, the construction of the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project pillars, the completion of the Penang International Airport (PIA) expansion project, and many other initiatives that are being actively pursued through the cooperation of the state and federal governments,” he said in his New Year 2026 message today.

He said that in line with efforts to strengthen the growth of high-value industries, the implementation of strategic projects such as the Penang IC Design and Digital Park, Penang Chip Design Academy and Silicon Research and Incubation Space is expected to open up more high-income job opportunities and attract investments from global technology companies.

Chow added that as a state with an industrial, service and a mature tourism industry, Penang has the potential to strengthen the people's economy through support for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the social economy, local entrepreneurship and high and medium-skill jobs.

According to him, initiatives such as upskilling and reskilling, support for gig workers, and the empowerment of urban and rural communities will ensure that economic growth is not only focused on large investments, but is also directly felt by households and local communities.

"Generally, it can be driven through a green economy, creative industries, digital technology and social innovation that opens up new job opportunities without affecting the environment, by prioritizing the balance between economic growth, social justice and sustainability.

"Penang can build an economy that is not only globally competitive, but also ensures that every family lives with dignity, safety and prosperity by 2030, where the progress achieved can be enjoyed by all without anyone being left behind," he said.

In his final term as Chief Minister, Chow is grateful and proud to see the state continue to move forward and play a significant role in national development.

According to him, Penang's strength lies not only in its strategic location and rich historical heritage, but also in the spirit and ability of its people to drive sustainable, competitive, inclusive and change-ready economic growth.

He said that, based on the Penang 2030 Vision: A Smart and Green Family-Centred State Inspired by the Nation, and in line with the MADANI Malaysia framework, the state government remains committed to charting a balanced and comprehensive development direction.
