SARAWAK TO DEVELOP SAMARAHAN INTO LOW-CARBON CITY — ABANG JOHARI

17/01/2026 04:54 PM

KUCHING, Jan 17 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government is formulating comprehensive development plans by focusing on the development of the southern region of the state, particularly Samarahan, as a modern low-carbon city in line with public health needs and environmental sustainability

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said development planning can be carried out more accurately and with clearer direction when development trends are identified and supported by statistical data and economic analysis.

“We are planning for future generations… this comprehensive planning will benefit Samarahan, Kuching and Serian.

“We are also planning large-scale green areas with the planting of various species of tropical trees, which will not only serve as tourist attractions but also function as research centres,” he said in his speech at the groundbreaking ceremony for Boulevard Samarahan near here today.

He said that in the Samarahan area, some 405 hectares have been identified to be designated as green areas that will be planted with Sarawak native hardwoods such as belian.

According to him, the area cannot be used for any commercial or residential development, and any proposed development must be tabled in the State Legislative Assembly.

“The construction of this boulevard is just the beginning. With this area in place, it can be developed into a recreational and jogging spot for residents, similar to the State Library and Reservoir Park, allowing people to enjoy fresher air,” he said.
