MCMC, SELANGOR STATE GOVT SIGN MOU TO ESTABLISH PARTNERSHIP FOR SMART CITY DEVELOPMENT

SHAH ALAM, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Selangor State Government today established a partnership for the Selangor State Smart City Development through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that the MoU focuses on three key areas under the coordination and monitoring of the Selangor Integrated & Intelligent Operations Centre (SIIOC) comprising Development of smart connectivity infrastructure, Enhancement of public safety and traffic management and Implementation of smart flood management.

“This collaboration is in line with the aspirations of the Selangor Smart Action Plan 2025 to be a leading smart state and digital economy, emphasising the use of technology to increase public service efficiency, citizen well-being, and urban competitiveness,” he said during his briefing at the MoU exchange ceremony today.

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, graced the event to witness the exchange of the MoU, represented by Selangor State Secretary Datuk Dr. Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin and MCMC Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din.

Also in attendance were the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

To support the initiative, Fahmi announced an increased allocation of RM450 million (up from RM350 million) following a request submitted by the state government.

Explaining further, Fahmi said the development of smart connectivity infrastructure will serve as the foundation of the smart city. This includes the expansion of fiber optic networks, public Wi-Fi facilities, and support for the National Digital Infrastructure Plan (JENDELA) to ensure Selangor residents enjoy broader, more stable, and higher-quality internet access.

“For the people of Selangor, this initiative will improve quality of life through more efficient and responsive public services, a safer urban environment, and more organised, data-driven traffic and disaster management systems,” he said.

He added that wider digital connectivity ensures no group is left behind from the economic and social benefits of the digital era.

This data-integrated approach will also allow the state government to make more accurate, sustainable, and high-impact policy decisions.

The Minister noted that the initiative acts as a catalyst for the state’s digital economy, encouraging innovation and increasing Selangor's attractiveness as a strategic investment destination.

“For the Ministry of Communications and MCMC, this collaboration reflects the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the national digital ecosystem in an inclusive and integrated manner,” Fahmi said.

He further revealed that Selangor achieved 96.9 percent 5G network coverage as of December 31, 2025, making it the leading state for 5G coverage in Malaysia.

“With a population of approximately 7.4 million, Selangor is the most populous state in Malaysia, reflecting a massive number of beneficiaries for any initiative, investment, or service provision. This achievement reflects the continuous commitment of His Majesty’s government to ensure technological progress is enjoyed fairly by the people,” he concluded.
