KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- Women journalists not only have to be proficient in technology, but also hold on to journalism values and principles in facing current challenges in the media landscape.
Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said developments in social media and digital platforms have sped up the spread of information, opening the door to fake news, propaganda and confusing narratives that affect public trust towards media institutions.
Mastery of digital tools and new platforms was vital but needed to be balanced with uncompromising integrity, she added.
“Therefore, PERTAMA with its experience and long history, has a huge responsibility to be the bulwark for ethical and principled journalism based on truth,” she said during her speech officiating the 55th anniversary of Persatuan Wartawan Wanita Malaysia (PERTAMA) here today, in the presence of PERTAMA president Datuk Sariha Mohd Ali and PERTAMA advisors Datuk Jamelah Bakar and Datin Rohana Mustapha.
Journalists no longer just report, but lift the voice of the people, fight for social justice and encourage national awareness, she added.
Noraini said that throughout its 55 years, PERTAMA played a vital role as a platform that united women journalists and championed their professional interests and development in the country.
“Women journalists should also play their part to bridge social realities and national aspirations as they are capable of bringing issues to the mainstream and give voice to those who have been neglected, thanks to their unique perspectives and sensitivities.
“I hope that PERTAMA will continue to lead in this matter,” she said.
She also shared her ministry’s initiatives in innovation-based industry developments, including the production of sustainable aviation fuel from used cooking oil, noting that it provided added value to existing resources and showed the capabilities of local scientists in developing related technology.
The demand for sustainable aviation fuel has risen, including demand on the international market, and has opened up new potentials for the country’s industry, she added.
