KUALA KRAI, Feb 10 (Bernama) -- The cultivation of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) among students in Kelantan remains low, based on research and data management conducted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) last year.
MOSTI STI Cultivation and Services Division secretary Abdullah Daud said the findings were obtained after states were categorised into three tiers based on students’ exposure and receptiveness to STI, as well as participation in activities organised by the ministry.
"The first category, recording the highest level of STI exposure, comprises Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and Selangor, while Pahang and Terengganu are in the middle category.
"Meanwhile, Sabah, Perlis, and Kelantan are placed in the third category, indicating a lower level of exposure and cultivation of STI," he told reporters after officiating the Kuala Krai MADANI STI Carnival at Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) Kuala Krai here today.
Elaborating further, Abdullah said the situation presents a challenge for the ministry to strengthen STI exposure in Kelantan to ensure the state does not fall behind.
"At the very least, we aim for the children in this state to reach the middle category through more targeted and continuous programmes.
“Furthermore, allocations are available for such activities, and schools may apply for funding or sponsorship, which will be approved if deemed suitable,” he said.
Commenting on the carnival, Abdullah said the event was inspired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to highlight new STI talents among students.
He added that the Kelantan-level MADANI STI programme, organised by Kelantan ICT Gateway Sdn Bhd, involved about 3,000 primary and secondary school students across the state.
