GOVERNMENT REVIEWING NEEDS, DIRECTION OF DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN LABUAN - LO

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 (Bernama) -- The government is reviewing the needs and direction of several development projects in Labuan, including the proposed relocation of the Labuan Waterfront Project, to ensure alignment with current priorities.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Datuk Lo Su Fui, said the matter was discussed at a meeting held yesterday, which also examined Labuan’s development priorities and project “wish list”.

He said the government is committed to reassessing the suitability of locations for several proposed projects, including the construction of an international convention centre.

“The proposal to build an International Convention Centre in Labuan is also part of this ongoing study,” he said when winding up the debate on the Royal Address in the Dewan Rakyat today.

On the Phase 1 Labuan Waterfront Project, Lo said it aims to realise waterfront development in the city centre in line with the Labuan Federal Territory development plan and the long-term objectives of the 13th Malaysia Plan, which emphasise a balance between economic, social, environmental and governance aspects.

“Essentially, the Labuan Waterfront Project is one of the key components of Labuan’s development structure plan,” he said.

Meanwhile, addressing parking congestion in Putrajaya, Lo said the Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) is conducting a Study on the Putrajaya Development Plan 2050 (RPP2050), which is expected to be completed in October.

To ease congestion around school areas, he added that PPj has implemented three main initiatives, including enhanced traffic control in collaboration with the police and a pilot road safety project in designated school zones.
