MACC TO SUBMIT DOE E-WASTE BRIBERY PROBE PAPERS ON FRIDAY

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Investigation papers on the alleged abuse of power and corruption in the management of electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) involving the Department of Environment (DOE) director-general (DG) and deputy DG will be submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers on Friday.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said investigations into the two senior officers are now at the final stages.

“I have given the investigating officers two weeks, and I assure that by this Friday the investigation papers will be submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers with a recommendation to charge both individuals,” he told a press conference here today.

On Jan 29, the MACC detained the DOE DG and deputy DG to assist in investigations into a case linked to the management of electrical and electronic waste.

In a separate development, Azam said the MACC has deployed four additional officers to the Defence Ministry to help address issues of leakages and governance, particularly involving procurement matters at the ministry.

Azam said it is still too early to conclude that the ministry has been fully cleansed.

Last January, four senior Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) officers were charged in court over alleged abuse of power involving military procurement and the management of welfare funds, including cases linked to the Armed Forces Welfare Fund (TKAT) as well as supplies under the Defence Ministry.

The issue also drew the attention of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, who stressed that corruption must be fought on a large scale without legal protection, including against high-ranking officers.
