IPOH, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- The implementation of Cloud Seeding Operations in the Bukit Merah and Lake Temengor areas last week has successfully increased water levels in both catchment areas.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad stated that the operation was necessary to ensure sufficient water resource management and to maintain the feasibility of hydroelectric power generation.
"To address the water shortage in Lake Temengor, Lake Banding, and Lake Chenderoh - if we do not carry out cloud seeding and it fails to rain - it disrupts and affects the feasibility of electricity generation.
"At the same time, when water levels are low in these lakes, TNB (Tenaga Nasional Berhad) cannot release water. This leads to dry conditions from Kuala Kangsar down to Teluk Intan, which subsequently affects the water intake points operated by LAP (Perak Water Board) and JPS (Department of Irrigation and Drainage)," he said.
He said this when met by reporters during a walkabout at the Ramadan Bazaar in the Perak Stadium grounds at Jalan Kompleks Sukan here today.
On Feb 10, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that several cloud seeding operations would be carried out in three states - Johor, Kedah, and Perak - as water levels in several dams in those states were depleting due to the continuous hot weather.
