SERDANG, Feb 25 (Bernama) -- The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, today graced a breaking of fast event and performed tarawih prayers with about 1,000 members of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) community and residents in the surrounding areas at Masjid UPM here.

His Royal Highness was received by Higher Education secretary-general Datuk Dr Anesee Ibrahim, UPM Board of Directors chairman Datuk Seri Jailani Johari and UPM vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah.

At the event, Sultan Sharafuddin presented Aidilfitri contributions to orphans, mualaf (Muslim reverts), the disabled and 50 asnaf  (tithe recipients)  comprising UPM students.

Sultan Sharafuddin, in his capacity as UPM Chancellor, consented to accept donations, endowments, waqf and zakat contributions from various parties to the university.

His Royal Highness received UPM’s zakat fund amounting to RM10.29 million, managed by the Waqf, Zakat and Infak Management Centre (WAZAN), as well as various zakat and waqf contributions from corporate partners, agencies and individuals.

Among the contributions received were RM450,000 from Lembaga Tabung Haji and RM200,000 from Etiqa General Takaful Berhad, in addition to business zakat and income zakat from university-linked companies, including Putra Business School.

Sultan Sharafuddin also received UPM’s Wakaf Ilmu contribution totalling RM1.21 million, which will fund academic initiatives, provide financial assistance to students, and support research and facility development.

His Royal Highness later performed the Maghrib and Isyak prayers, followed by tarawih prayers with the congregation.

Meanwhile, in a statement today, WAZAN UPM director Haris Dahlan said the centre had distributed RM4.9 million in zakat funds throughout last year.

He said the funds play a vital role not only in assisting students in need but also in supporting the overall ecosystem of knowledge development and the well-being of the university community.

“WAZAN serves as a balancing mechanism that aligns welfare, education and university development needs.

“The funds channelled are strategically planned to ensure comprehensive, sustainable and continuous impact,” he said.
