KUANTAN, Feb 28 (Bernama) -- The atmosphere at a shopping mall here turned lively when the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, graciously spent time with orphans purchasing preparations for Aidilfitri.
His Royal Highness was accompanied by his sons, the Crown Prince of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah, and Tengku Amir Nasser Ibrahim Shah.
Al-Sultan Abdullah also took the opportunity to mingle with the children under the care of Yayasan Keluarga Malaysia (YKM) as they selected their favourite festive outfits.
During the event, the Sultan of Pahang and Tengku Hassanal also spent time interacting warmly with the orphans and taking commemorative photographs.
Meanwhile, YKM chairman Ismail Sabri Yaakob told reporters that this year’s annual programme was more special as 57 orphans and their guardians had the opportunity to meet the Sultan of Pahang while personally choosing their Aidilfitri necessities.
For this programme, he said each orphan under YKM’s care, who lost a parent due to COVID-19, received RM300 to purchase various festive necessities.
“We allocate spending for orphans during every festive celebration, not limited to Aidilfitri. For those who celebrated Chinese New Year recently, we also extended assistance,” the former prime minister said.
He added that all recipients were also feted at a breaking-of-fast event held at a hotel here today.
For Junaidah Omar, 49, she expressed deep gratitude and emotion as four of her five school-going children have received assistance from YKM for three consecutive years.
The aid has helped ease her burden after losing her husband to COVID-19 in 2022, and she now supports the family by selling nasi lemak.
“This assistance completes my children’s Raya preparations. Based on our means, we truly cannot afford to buy many items, and today is even more special because our whole family got to see Tuanku (the Sultan of Pahang),” she said.
