KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Translators Association (PPM), in collaboration with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), is organising a two-day Intercultural Skills course starting tomorrow to strengthen the competence of local translators, in line with efforts to enhance professionalism in the country’s translation industry.

PPM president Dr Hasuria Che Omar said the course, which will be conducted online from 9 am to 5 pm, is designed to equip participants with practical and analytical skills to produce translations that are accurate in meaning and appropriate to the target cultural context.

“In the era of globalisation and digitalisation, translators play a strategic role in ensuring professional communication as well as the accurate and clear delivery of economic, legal and corporate information. PPM’s collaboration with DBP is a proactive step to build the capacity of local translators,” she told Bernama.

She said the course has also been identified as one of the components considered as part of the requirements for translators to sit for the Accreditation Test scheduled to be held in the middle of this year.

Dr Hasuria, who is also the PPM course director, said that by the end of the programme, participants are expected to be able to accurately identify cultural elements in source texts and analyse differences in values, norms and cultural contexts between the source and target languages.

“It is hoped that participants will also be able to apply appropriate translation strategies to address cultural elements in the text and produce translations that preserve the original meaning while remaining suitable for the target culture,” she said.

She added that the course will also provide a platform for both young and experienced translators to interact with language experts, share best practices and expand their professional networks.

The fee to join the course is RM350, with PPM members receiving a 10 per cent discount.
