12/03/2026 02:04 PM

MELAKA, March 12 (Bernama) -- The Melaka state government is planning to provide at least one dedicated rest centre for the gig worker community in each district in the state in an effort to enhance the welfare of this group, which is currently estimated to exceed 5,000 people.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said this facility, known as the Rider Pitstop, will be set up in several strategic locations to enable those in the sector to rest and wait for orders or customers.

"As a government that truly cares for the people, we plan to provide more dedicated rest centres or Rider Pitstops at several strategic locations in the state so that the rider community has more comfortable and safe resting places.

"Additionally, the state government will also add four new passenger pickup locations for the p-hailing service. These places will be at Melaka Sentral, Pantai Klebang, Hospital Melaka and EON Bandaraya Melaka," he said while speaking at the 'Majlis Moreh Bersama Rider Dan Penggiat Gig' event at Seri Bendahara in Ayer Keroh here last night.

Elaborating further, Ab Rauf said the state government is always open to receiving applications, complaints, views, and assistance requests from the gig worker community in the state, and all these matters will be coordinated by the state government before being compiled and brought to the attention of the federal level.

He said the state government will also distribute a Ramadan contribution, amounting to RM50,000, to the p-hailing community and gig workers in Melaka as a token of appreciation for their contributions to the state's economy.

Earlier, Ab Rauf also handed over a state government contribution to the Melaka State Education Trust Fund (TAPEM), worth RM30,000, to 12 Melaka students from 12 institutions of higher learning (IPT) during a buka puasa event with Melaka students.

He added that the contribution is also part of the state government's commitment to ensuring that students remain active in various self-development programmes, and it is hoped that it can help the respective student associations at universities to carry out various programmes that benefit members.
