KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 (Bernama) -- Muslims in Malaysia are encouraged to observe Aidilfitri on a moderate scale and avoid wasteful spending, particularly in light of ongoing global economic uncertainty.
Perak Deputy Mufti Datuk Zamri Hashim said that while Aidilfitri is a deeply meaningful religious celebration, it should not be marked by excess, as Islam prohibits extravagance and waste.
He urged Muslims to prioritise spending based on necessity and means, and to avoid ostentatious expenditure or following trends for appearance’s sake.
“Spending should focus on essential needs such as children’s education and healthcare,” he told Bernama in response to the call by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the public to remain prudent in their spending during the Syawal festivities.
Anwar had stressed that amid an uncertain global economic climate, individuals must manage their finances with discipline to better prepare for future uncertainties.
On the practice of hosting open houses, Zamri said such gatherings should return to their original purpose of strengthening bonds and fostering forgiveness, rather than showcasing wealth.
He noted that waste often occurs when open houses feature costly entertainment, such as performances by well-known artistes, which can run into thousands of ringgit.
“Menus should be simple and reasonable. Do not focus so much on the scale of the celebration that the original purpose, visiting and reconnecting, is forgotten.
“Hosts should not feel burdened to provide excessive food, while guests should observe proper etiquette and refrain from criticising what is served,” he said.
He also encouraged Muslims to share their blessings with the poor and underprivileged, which he said should take precedence over unnecessary spending, such as replacing still-serviceable curtains or furniture.
