PERAK MUFTI DEPT URGES REVIEW OF "TIDUR LAMBAK" PROGRAMME TO ENSURE SYARIAH COMPLIANCE

28/03/2026 12:42 PM

IPOH, March 28 (Bernama) -- The Perak State Mufti Department has advised organisers of the “Tidur Lambak” mass sleep event to refine its implementation and consult religious authorities before proceeding.

In a statement, the department stressed that both the Mufti Department and the State Islamic Religious Department should be engaged to ensure that such programmes align with Islamic principles and uphold human dignity.

“Recreational or nostalgic activities are not inherently prohibited, but they must adhere to Islamic guidelines that govern human conduct in this world and the hereafter,” read the statement, which was uploaded on Facebook.

The event, inspired by Malaysian cultural experiences, particularly the communal sleeping atmosphere during “balik kampung”, is scheduled to take place in Ipoh on March 27 and 28. It aims to recreate nostalgic moments while fostering social interaction and offering a unique shared experience.

While not objecting outright, the department emphasised the need for careful evaluation of such programmes through the lens of Islamic law and Malay cultural values to avoid actions that may lead to misunderstanding or contradict moral principles.

“The implementation of Islamic teachings in all aspects of life is meant to safeguard human dignity and well-being, including in the organisation of events involving the public,” it said.

A key concern raised was the potential for “ikhtilat” -- the mixing of non-mahram men and women -- which could lead to situations that conflict with Islamic guidelines, such as difficulty in maintaining modesty and proper boundaries.

The department reiterated that religion is not meant to restrict social interaction, but to protect individuals from harm and preserve moral integrity.
